S'EXPRESS ORIGINAL MECHAMIX

In 1988 the music scene was rapidly changing especially in the UK where the rave and acid house scenes were beginning to really take off. One of the most commercially successful acid house/dance acts of the time was DJ and producer Mark Moore, who under the guise of S'EXPRESS smashed the charts apart with the anthem THEME FROM S'EXPRESS. This was quickly followed by 2 more hits SUPERFLY GUY and HEY MUSIC LOVER. The debut album ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK soon followed and featured what many consider to be the very first electronic ambient dance track (COMA 2 A.M./O.K.). Produced by Pascal Gabriel who also worked with Bomb The Bass, Erasure, Debbie Harry, Soft Cell and Yello, the dancefloor friendly album was a huge success and helped propel sample heavy dance and acid house music into the 1990s.

Originally released in 1997 - THE PRODIGY's 3rd album THE FAT OF THE LAND was to be the album that made The Prodigy a worldwide electronic phenomenon. With the first single FIRESTARTER blasting it's way to the top of the charts we knew that the boys had become harder and tougher than ever before. Then came BREATHE which not only crossed genres but opened them up to a whole new audience and made them international chart topping superstars almost over night, even smashing the elusive American music market. Then came the most controversial single and video of their career SMACK MY BITCH UP. The video was banned by most music tv shows and could only been seen after midnight on most channels. The song became an anthem immediately and still to do this day is their most popular live track. THE FAT OF THE LAND was at the time The Prodigy's most mature sounding record, fusing hip hop beats and samples from the likes of The Beastie Boys and The Ultra Magnetic MC's and even featuring Crispian Mills from KULA SHAKER as guest vocalist on the epic NARAYAN. The album ends with Keith Flint's punk style vocals on their cover of Fuel My Fire originally written and performed by Melbourne (Australia) band The Cosmic Psychos and re-written by grunge group L7. OOOOOOOHHH ON THE TLC TIP MECHAMIX - 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

1992 saw the release of TLC's debut album OOOOOOOHH ON THE TLC TIP which spawned 3 Number 1 singles, Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg, Baby Baby Baby and What About Your Friends. This feisty, loud and colourful trio broke through the pop/hip hop scene with their upbeat hits, smooth harmonies, witty raps and of course their brightly coloured baggy clothing . TLC was all about female empowerment years before Destiny's Child and the Spice Girls were even thought of. With their safe sex message proudly celebrated via condoms of varies sizes pinned to their clothing, TLC wanted to be fun and fierce all at once. The album showcased not only the ladies abilities to create smooth melodies with sharp and witty lyrics, but also proved that rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was a force to be reckoned with, eventually becoming one of the most sought after female rappers of her time. So 20 years on and this album still stands as a fun filled frenzy of funked up beats and catchy sing along hits....and that is oooooohh on the TLC tip!

 In 1986 there was a group from the UK who were so outlandish in both appearance and music that they were lambasted by critics worldwide as nothing more than style over substance...they may have been right but one thing they did do was bring sampling to the pop charts in a way no one had done before..with their eye firmly on the future, the Sputnik boys provided some of the most fun and nonsensical music of the 80's, with lyrics about rockets, hermaphrodites, sex and robots it was pure insanity. As the 80's electro sound has made a resurgence and style over substance is the way to top the charts these days, let's take a look at how the big boys in high heels used to do it!

Included in this mix is the brilliant DMC mix of their classic Love Missile F1-11 and a special audio doco put together by Sputnik front man Tony James himself recapping the madness that was.
